As Australians enjoy the King’s Birthday long weekend, police forces across several states are cracking down on risky driver behavior with a focus on saving lives.

From Thursday, June 6 to Sunday, June 9, NSW and the ACT are enforcing double demerit points for a range of driving offences. These include speeding, using a mobile phone behind the wheel, and not wearing a seatbelt or helmet. Drivers caught doing the wrong thing could face heavier penalties than usual.

In Victoria, where 37 people died on the roads in May alone, police have launched Operation Regal, aimed at reducing serious crashes. Extra patrols will target speeding, fatigue, and distraction—particularly on highways heading out of Melbourne and into the alpine areas.

Other states like South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory don’t use double demerits, but authorities there are still increasing visibility and urging drivers to take care. In Hobart, the long weekend coincides with the Dark Mofo festival, and police are asking both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, especially at night.

The message is clear: if you’re heading away, drive responsibly. Police will be out in force, and they’re not taking chances when it comes to safety.

Stay safe, slow down, and enjoy the long weekend—without losing your license.
